Artist in Residence - Unity on the River
Since 2002, I have been Artist in Residence at Unity on the River in Amesbury, Massachusetts. Unity is a spiritual center that has Sunday services with an expansive, inclusive message and great music, a full service bookstore, a growing children’s program and an astoundingly solid appreciation for art. Unity on the River, led by the Reverend Shipley Allinson, is a showcase for the power of art to help transform consciousness. Over the past seven years, I have sought to bring expanded exposure and awareness of art to this beautiful community.
In 2004 I began the Gallery at Unity on the River, showcasing artists and art forms from all over the Northeast with monthly shows. My Twelve Power paintings, and many others, grace the walls of the Sanctuary, Administrative Offices, the Bookstore and Children’s area. In 2007, I taught a year-long series of Thursday night classes that integrated spiritual teachings with art expression, including The Secret, The Four Agreements, and culminating with Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way. My poetry is often incorporated into Sunday services, in a unique musical expression called Temple Thieves. In the Spring of 2009, Unity on the River will show the premiere of my multi-media installation called Temple. Isabel Van Merlin and Jill Regensburg are partners in this large work, which celebrates the body and spirit’s ability to heal any unbalance with love and acceptance.
My work at Unity on the River continues to be a highlight of my life. This community—open and ever-changing—is a continued source of inspiration and happiness for me.
My desire is that the position of Artist in Residence become as common to all kinds of open-minded organizations as CFOs or Bookkeepers are already.
Namaste,
Paula Estey
